Semptember 21 AQOTWF

In a time of great nationalism for all countries across Europe war erupted and with the mix pride and technology of the industrial revolution, a war that man had never yet witnessed was coming. With the story about a typical soldier who witnessed the war which was to be called “the war to end all wars” from the beginning to his own end and almost to the end of the war itself. Those who have not fought on the front have no idea what Paul and the other young soldiers had to go through growing up fast just to survive; and in the process figuratively had their youth stolen from them as they are not able to look at the world the same without militaristic ideals. Paul was forced to watch as friends he grew up with died all around him. He described those he watched die as changed men in the aspect that they lost all the features who made them who they were in personality and looks. As Paul moves further into the war he realizes that everything that he and his fellow countrymen were raised to believe had nothing to do with war. Swept by the nationalism tide entering the war, they were told to be patriotic and serve. The idea to die for ones country was honorable, even though the reality of it was that it wasn’t and that the whole country had no real knowledge as to what was really happening on the fronts. After everything Paul went through he was killed on a quiet day at the end of the war, and in the end joined the rest of his fellow soldiers.
